Kumbungu District is one of the newly created districts carved out of the then Tolon/Kumbungu District with Legislative Instrument (L. I) 2062 of 2011. It was inaugurated on the 28th June, 2012 with Kumbungu as its capital.

The District is located in the northern flank of the Northern region and covers a land mass of approximately 1,599 km sq.

The District shares boundaries to the North with Mamprugu/Moagduri district, Tolon and North Gonja districts to the West, Sagnarigu District to the South and Savelugu Municipal to the East.

The district is made up of 115 communities with 24 electoral areas (EAs), One (1) Town council (TC) and Five (5) Area councils (AC). These include; Gupanerigu, Gbullung, Zangbalung, Dalun and Voggu Area councils and the Kumbungu town council being the administrative capital

Tourism

The district houses the only water treatment plant in the northern region that supplies potable drinking water to the whole of the regional capital, including Savelugu Municipal, Sagnerigu and Tolon districts.   Other tourist attractions in the district include;  
  • Bontanga irrigation dam,
  • Traditional Artifacts at Logshegu and
  • The Night Market at Gbullung

Tourism Potentials

A number of tourist attractions can be found in the District, which is largely untapped. These include:
  1. The Dalun Water Treatment Centre
  2. Traditional Artifacts at Logshegu
  • The Night Market at Gbullung
  1. Bontanga Irrigation Dam
  2. The Voggu market in the evenings
  3. The ancestral habitats of the Kumbungu people (Saling Ni)
  • The ancestral grounds of the people of Dalun where alleged witches are sent (Nawuni)
NO. SECTOR POTENTIAL INVESTMENT PROJECTS
1 Agricultural Ø  Large hectares of arable land suitable for commercial production of cereals, legumes and root and tuber crops. The common crops cultivated in the district include maize, rice, soya beans, groundnuts and other tubers crops such as yam and sweet potato. Commercial Agricultures is one of the main investment potentials in the Kumbung District.   Ø  Existence of water bodies for dry season vegetable cultivation in commercial quantities. There is great potential for dry season cultivation vegetables such as water-melon, tomato, onion, sugar-cane etc. along the beds of tributaries of White Volta River in the overseas areas of the district where volumes of water bodies remain standing throughout the year.   Ø  Suitable environment for commercial production and marketing of Livestock and Poultry.   Ø  The rivers also offer opportunities for fishing and aquaculture development.   Ø  Shea nut processing and shea butter extraction as well as local soap making and rice processing. This can help to ensure valued-chain addition.   Ø  The District also is endowed with large valleys for rice cultivation at Bontanga irrigation which provides great potentials for irrigation development. Farmers in the District enjoy the biggest irrigation dam in the region located near Bontanga. The project has the potential area of 800 hectares of which 570 hectares has been developed. There is another 495 hectares of irrigable land that can be an opportunity for investment.   Ø  There are viable Farmer Based Organizations willing to go into commercial farming in the district, hence, investment in tractor services.   Ø  Establish rice processing centers in the District.
2 Education Ø  Public-Private participation in educational infrastructure.   Ø  Partner with potential investors to establish vocational institution in the District.   Ø  Construct more classroom blocks and teachers’ quarters to improve teaching and learning.   Ø  Logistical support to GES for monitoring and supervision to ensure desirable educational outcomes for both first and second cycles in the District.
3 Health Ø  Establishment of private clinics and maternity homes in the District.   Ø  Provide CHPS compounds in some selected communities to improve health service delivery.
4 Roads Ø  Linking of District Capital to other communities in the District for smooth movement of goods and services.   Ø  Construction of feeder roads to prevent post-harvest loses.   Ø  Linking of District Capital to other adjoining District.
5 Water & Sanitation Ø  Public-Private participation in establishment of final solid waste disposal site manage.   Ø  Households latrine construction to ensure CLTS in the District.   Ø  Public-Private participation construction institutional KVIPs.   Ø  Dams construction for Local Economic Ventures.   Ø  Boreholes provision in some communities in the District.
