Kumbungu District is one of the newly created districts carved out of the then Tolon/Kumbungu District with Legislative Instrument (L. I) 2062 of 2011. It was inaugurated on the 28th June, 2012 with Kumbungu as its capital.

The District is located in the northern flank of the Northern region and covers a land mass of approximately 1,599 km sq.

The District shares boundaries to the North with Mamprugu/Moagduri district, Tolon and North Gonja districts to the West, Sagnarigu District to the South and Savelugu Municipal to the East.

The district is made up of 115 communities with 24 electoral areas (EAs), One (1) Town council (TC) and Five (5) Area councils (AC). These include; Gupanerigu, Gbullung, Zangbalung, Dalun and Voggu Area councils and the Kumbungu town council being the administrative capital

A Cleaner Kumbungu : Community Comes Together on National Sanitation Day" On 15 November 2025, Kumbungu district took a significant step towards a cleaner, healthier environment as residents, community leaders, and government officials joined forces for a massive clean-up exercise on National Sanitation Day. The event, held at Kumbungu town saw a massive turnout of enthusiastic participants, including students, market women, and local artisans, armed with rakes, brooms, and gloves, tackling the district's toughest sanitation challenges. "We are proud to see our community come together to take ownership of our environment," said Hon. Imoro Yakubu kakpagu District Chief Executive. "A clean environment is a shared responsibility, and we're committed to working with our partners to make Kumbungu a model of sanitation excellence." The clean-up exercise focused on clearing waste, draining stagnant water, and sensitizing residents on proper waste disposal practices. The event also featured health screenings, environmental education, and distribution of sanitation materials. "Cleaning our community is not just a one-day event, it's a way of life," said Peter Addai an environmental officer. "We'll continue to work together to keep our district clean and beautiful." The event was organized by the Kumbungu district assembly. Let's keep Kumbungu clean and green! 🌿
